Who Doesn’t Like to Go Shopping “For a Good Deal”?
The abusive practice of forum shopping where structured settlement annuitants are lured to Florida’s Sumter and Broward Counties and other jurisdictions in other states, often under false pretenses. They proceed to get “churned and burned”. after being inveigled in a fraud, which the factoring companies will use in their defense. It’s disgusting.
A law suit filed by Greenwich lawyer Edward Stone on behalf of Michael Lafontant in December 15, 2014 in United States District Court Southern District of New York against Washington Square Financial d/b/a Imperial Structured Settlements and Andrew Levine Case 7:2014cv09895 , was fomented by one of the more egregious examples of alleged abusive forum shopping.
I urge annuitants who have been instructed by settlement purchasers to misrepresent their state of residence in order to facilitate structured settlement factoring transactions in jurisdictions or with judges known for lenient enforcement of the best interest test to come forward. Real change can only occur when victims share their experiences, and the details of the alleged misconduct and those responsible are exposed to raise public awareness.
