After receiving an increasing number of calls from individuals who bought policies from Independent Life and Accident of Jacksonville a long time ago (or their heirs), as the result of my articles (on this blog and 4structures’ Settlement News Network blog ) about the unveiling of Independent Life Insurance Company. I thought this might be helpful information
Who was Independent Life & Accident Insurance Company?
- Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company was founded in 1920 and was based at 1 Independent Drive in Jacksonville Florida.
- Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company is not related in any way to Independent Life Insurance Company, established in 2017, a structured settlement only insurance company, which is based in Forth Worth TX and has administrative offices in Jacksonville, FL.
- In 1997 Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company merged with American General Life Insurance Company based in Houston, TX (which later became a subsidiary of AIG in 2001, as part of the AIG LIfe & Retirement division later spun off as Corebridge Financial in 2022).
What Should You Do if You are an Insured of Independent Life AND Accident or a Beneficiary of Someone who was insured by Independent Life AND Accident?
- You should contact American General at 800-888-2452
- Given that Independent Life and Accident’s merger into American General occurred in 1997, when it is possible that the first customer service representative you speak to was not even born or was crawling around in diapers, please be patient. They may or may not know the history. Make sure to explain that “you are a policyholder or beneficiary of a policy with Independent Life and Accident which was merged into American General in 1997”.
