It seems improbable that actor Ben Affleck would be shilling for any settlement, annuity and lotter purchaser, let alone Sovereign Funding Group
Yet the wannabe follower to my Twitter feed used the moniker ” affleckben993 ” in an ignominious attempt to promote the business of Sovereign Funding Group.
Despite only making 3 tweets promoting Sovereign Funding Group on September 6, 2012, the “Affleck” name had accumulated over 400 followers to over 1,800 followed.
- First, a Google Search “Ben Affleck Sovereign Funding” came up empty at time of posting.
- Second, setting aside the ignominious fact that the post that is promoted by the Ben Affleck wannabe bears the tell tale signs of cheap SEO from overseas (i.e. lack of expertise, stories that make no sense and the big snirtle on the syntax errors).
- For your amusement…

A call was placed to Mr. Affleck’s representatives in both New York and Los Angeles this afternoon to inquire about wheher the use of his name to promote Sovereign Funding Group was authorized. For the record, Negative!
Sovereign Funding is a co-Defendant in an ongoing lawsuit filed by Woodbridge Structured Funding in the United States District Court for District of Maryland. {see Woodbridge Structured Funding LLC v Sovereign Funding, et al. Civil Action No. : MJG-11-3421]
Woodbridge alleged in its November 28, 2011 complaint that “Sovereign Funding has used fraudulent and deceptive search engine (“SEO”) technique, under which Sovereign Funding, either directly or working with vendors under its control and direction have created landing sites and search results which misdirect consumers when a search is made using the term Woodbridge, both alone or in combination with other words”. The Defendants have denied the allegations.
A lawsuit with similar allegations was filed by JG Wentworth last year against the same Defendant parties and settled in March 2012.
- According to a Court filing made by Sovereign Funding and the co-Defendant David Springer on June 25, 2012 Sovereign Mortgage & Funding Company {“Sovereign Funding”) has ceased operations.
- The Better Business Bureau report has listed a “James Goldstein” as “sole proprietor” of Sovereign Funding since Judge Marvin Garbis denied the Defendants’ summary judgment motion June 19, 2012.
- I called Mr. Goldstein this afternoon to confirm the authorized use of Ben Affleck’s name at 3:04pm today. The attendant Josette, said the phone call was monitored and recorded for quality purposes.
- During the phone call, the attendant confirmed that the company’s address was in Mt. Airy, Maryland, and was known to be the residence of David Springer.
- It would be great if the appropriate person, whether David Springer or James Goldstein, could just confirm the authorized use of the Ben Affleck name to promote their services.
Postscript
- In June 2013, David Springer, the Mt Airy MD businessman, admitted in a lawsuit deposition to creating a number of fictitious characters, including “James Goldstein”, that were used to promote the his business at a time that he claimed in another lawsuit he was not in business.
- The lawsuit against David Springer, with the admission, went to trial in August 2014 and in 2015 resulted in a liability verdict agansit David Springer and monetary judgment in favor of Woodbridge Structured Funding, the party suing David Springer.
- In his findings of fact in April 2015, Judge Marvin Garbis made note of David Springer’s “questionable business practices.
- Judge Garbis concluded that David Springer waa a sole propriertor and awarded damagess to his opponents.
