The vast majority of structured settlement annuitants do not sell future annuity payments, according to a June 1, 2012 JG Wentworth press release announcing the results of a company study. The company used data it has compiled over the last 20 years.
J.G. Wentworth, the USA's largest purchaser of structured settlement payment rights also observed:
- People who do sell their structured settlement payments typically wait an average of over 8.5 years before they sell any portion of their settlement payments.
- 87.2% of holders of structured settlement payment rights have made no attempt to learn more about the option of selling payments.
J.G. Wentworth asserts that these findings demonstrate that structured settlements work as planned for the overwhelming majority of people over a long period of time.
