W. Campbell Mears, Jr., CPA, CSSC has joined Strategic Capital Corporation, a national provider of post-settlement funding services, as Vice President.
In a November 30, 2010 interview with the structured settlement watchdog, John Darer, Mears, known to most in the industry as "Cam" said:
"I believe there is a need in the “secondary market” for people who really understand structured settlements. The secondary market handled $800 million in transactions last year, but there are firms that advertise on TV and use mass marketing to solicit annuitants, where the annuitant's first point of contact is someone at a call center who may lack the necessary experience or credentials to advise them. There is a need for people who can advise annuitants and help them make good, responsible decisions about their financial needs".
Mears went on to say:
"Strategic Capital works primarily on referrals (note they have a website) , and in my new role I will serve as a resource to structured settlement consultants and attorneys when clients call them seeking to raise cash to solve financial problems that they cannot solve anywhere else. I will work with annuitants to develop responsible solutions that address their overall financial needs".
As one of Mears new competitors has published " Who better to assist an annuitant in their time of financial need than someone who has a vast amount of experience putting structures together?!"
Commentary
In my opinion Cam Mears brings something new (1) to the secondary market, (2) to Strategic Capital and (3) to the many structured settlement brokers and settlement planners in the NSSTA and SSP who refer annuitants in need of liquidity to factoring companies and intermediaries. He brings real primary market structured settlement industry experience, having served both as a structured settlement broker and for a major casualty insurance company. Cam is knowledgeable, articulate and possesses a CPA as well as a Certified Structured Settlement Consultant.
I plan to have Cam Mears on my Legal Broadcast Network show in a couple of weeks to further discuss this move and some of ways he hopes to have a positive impact the secondary market.
We wish Cam the best of luck in his new endeavor.
