Convict Philip Barry is described by the Daily News as a "boyish looking schlub" . Why don't we simply refer to this guy as Dirty Barry  "The Brooklyn Schlub" and his dastardly acts, for which he has been convicted,  as a "Schlubsky scheme"?

In Judge Raymond Dearie's courtroom this past week, in the United States District Court: Eastern District of New York,  "The Brooklyn Schlub" got 20 years for ripping off his working-class neighbors and others. [Cite: U.S. v. Barry, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York09-CR-833 (RJD)]. He was convicted  in November 2010 of 1 count of securities fraud and 33 counts of mail fraud according to reports.

Frankly I have a bit of "lactose intolerance" for the New York tabloid press continuing to give the Bay Ridge Brooklyn convict the notoriety of being labeled "Brooklyn's Bernie Madoff", "Mini Madoff" or "the Bernie Madoff of Bay Ridge".  It doesn't say much for Brooklyn or Bay Ridge, which as this "recently posted" video suggests may "just be coming to grips" with the stigma of "Tony Manero").

The only similiarity to Madoff is that Dirty Barry left victims penniless though Ponzi schemes.

I despise Madoff and Rothstein and low level hoods like Richard S. Piccoli (who ripped off Catholic priests and seniors), but as Ponzi scheme convicts go, "Dirty Barry" is not on the same planet as Bernie Madoff or even the cherubic Scott Rothstein.

  • Madoff $50B
  • Rothstein $1B
  • Dirty Barry $24M

Dirty Barry wasn't showy, he didn't live a glamorous life. His scam wasn't as intricate as Madoff (although no less devastating for his workling-class victims).

Dirty Barry didn't have the cockalorum of Rothstein, or place his keister on gold plated toilet seats, or befuddle a former US attorney and the South Florida press corps about structured settlements, like Rothstein.

"(Barry) lived in his parents' rent-controlled apartment, he never took a vacation …he lived a frugal, lonely lifestyle and had no significant romantic relationships.," his attorney wrote in court papers.

"Does that make any difference to these folks?" Judge Dearie asked.  Here Here!
