A bit off topic, but at the inevitable debate at a local restaurant tonight I heard "F—" The Constitution" after I countered why Casey Anthony wasn't "forced to take the stand" with the 5th Amendment, part of our Bill of Rights. It sure felt like Speaker's Corner on a Sunday morning in London where people like Danny Shine (below) are free to stand on a soap box to speak about the absurdity of Society.450px-Danny_Shine_Speaker%27s_Corner

Does our Society really need to change its fundamental principles because of the Casey Anthony verdict?

On Change.org, Michelle Crowder of Durant, Oklahoma has started a petition, which in less than 24 hours,  has 43,000+ signatures to propose a new federal law be created, called Caylee's law, that will make it a federal offense for a parent or guardian to not notify law enforcement of a child going missing in a timely manner. Constructive.

Yet the chilling part "Let's keep another case like Caylee Anthony out of the Courts" (emphasis added). Two words, "due process".

We feel outrage at perceived injustice and the judicial outcomes of public trials are not always to our liking. Yet thankfully we live in a Society where people no longer get hung from tree limbs by lynch mobs (because of their color, religion or suspicion of guilt),   debate is encouraged, and we have the freedoms that are embodied in the Bill of Rights.

Thank you James Madison and the Congress of 1789-1791.

When taken out of context as you have done you would be right, however the point she is trying to make is to effectively keep these types of cases with similar outcomes from occurring.
In this case the law was ill equipped to handle a parent or guardian of a child not reporting said child being either missing or deceased, what in any sane person’s mind is blatantly wrong.
The law in this case failed as it was unable to be properly applied in a way that makes good sense, and if change does not occur other cases could be exactly as this one, which is the goal of the petition, to give the person due process but also give the law tools that common sense dictates should have already been in place.
In other words: Lets give law the tools it needs to do what common sense dictates is right. Lets not let the outcome of these cases be repeated. “Let’s keep another case LIKE Caylee Anthony out of the Courts” (Emphasis is mine).
But far be it from me to expect a you to understand the context, spirit, or inferred meanings of ones words (which really only requires an 8th grade reading level) since that would not have allowed you to get on your soapbox as easily.
When words are taken from their context they can indeed seem out of place, but thankfully for you the first amendment defends your right to write such sensational pieces. Even if they are sensational pieces of garbage. The first amendment protects my ability to say that as well, imagine that.
Although I fully expect you will try to censor my speech in order to further your message, wouldn’t that mean that you yourself don’t respect the constitution and its fundamental principles?
I dare say that it is an interesting conundrum, isn’t it?

Mr. T (or is it Mrs. T, or Misty?) here’s your comment in all it’s first amendment glory my anonymous “friend”, whose IP address is from the Cox Network in Tulsa Oklahoma.
Despite your anonymity, I take it from your comments that you are a connoisseur of “sensationalist pieces of garbage” and taking into account “the context, spirit, or inferred meanings of your words”, someone, who is qualified to evaluate the reading comprehension of junior high school students.
Isn’t your opinion about “sensationlist piece of garbage” somewhat hypocritical since you have selected only that aspect of the post that deals with part of Ms. Crowder’s petition and not actually dealt with the main point and inspiration for the post which was the 5th amendment?
It may surprise you that I signed the petition for Caylee’s law WITHOUT your influence and BEFORE the post was written. I even used my real name on the petition instead of shrieking from “behind a fence” as you have chosen to do in your comment..
My post was commentary on a conversation I had in a local restaurant where someone felt that Casey Anthony should have been forced to take the stand.
I tried to explain the 5th Amendment to the person, who was understandably so fraught with emotion about the Anthony verdict the bIll of Rights momentarily meant nothing that their response was “F%^& the Constitution”. Hence the title of the post.
It was a juxtaposition of the emotional versus intellectual.
