The World Just Before the Affordable Care Act

Medical insurance for a family living in the five boroughs of New York City has entered another galaxy as the lowest cost of a family point of service (POS) plan has sprinted past $54,000 annually. That's BEFORE deductibles and co-pays!

Point of Services Plans offered by AETNA and Oxford exceed $70,000 per year and GHI is "light years beyond" at over $100,000 per year, according to information posted on the New York State Department of Financial Services website at time of posting.

A point of service plan permits a policyholder to choose between network and non network doctors at the "point of service" as opposed to an HMO plan which is more restrictive (and cheaper, but no less unaffordable for the masses).

There are a variety of alternatives such as Family Health Plus, a public health insurance program for adults who are aged 19 to 64 who have income too high to qualify for Medicaid. Family Health Plus is available to single adults, couples without children, and parents who are residents of New York State and are United States citizens or fall under one of many immigration categories.

Family Health Plus provides comprehensive coverage, including prevention, primary care, hospitalization, prescriptions and other services. There are minimal co-payments for some Family Health Plus services. Health care is provided through participating managed care plans in New York State.

Working individuals or families with income below certain levels may be able to qualify for Healthy New York ("Healthy NY") . Eligibility Requirements fro Healthy NY medical insurance program
