Structured settlement purchasers bulk mail structured settlement annuitants with "checks" in amounts that can be activated by calling the settlement purchaser's toll-free number and agreeing to sell their structured settlement to them.
While the sales gimmick sounds easy and convenient and a creative variation on the "advances" that funders often provide to sellers of structured settlements who are in a pinch, one dissenter told us that "under pressure" structured settlement annuitants should be wary of blindly falling for the approach, as it could cloud the essential price shopping which could possibly get the annuitant a much better deal.
Some of the sellers are actually mailing their own competitors! In the last two days I have heard from two people on the settlement purchasing side who have shared some of their experience with mailers.
The structured settlement secondary market has little regulation governing how annuitants can be solicited, particularly the approach. While many have a sense of right and wrong, others stretch the limits or what is reasonable and beyond. Some companies send letters and mailings from official sounding but non-existent agencies.
