Certain settlement purchasers are employing more aggressive sales tactics than ever. Some have employed deceptive techniques which we will out as we continue to investigate them. Some of these tactics are employed by the company directly, or through affiliate marketers who are given financial incentives to provide convertible leads.
A few tips for when you receive unsolicited calls:
1. Ask for a website
If you are approached by a sales person of any kind over the phone, and the product they are selling might interest you, always ask for a website while you have the person on the phone. If they are hesitant and seem to create an air of urgency as an excuse, then simply hang up the phone. I recently had someone try to sell me me promotional pens. I had to ask 4 times to get a web site.
2. Ask for a complete street address, if one is not displayed on the website
If the website does not list a complete street address, ask for the address. If there is any hestitation by the caller, then hang up.
3. Check with the Secretary of State in your state to see if the company is registered to do business there
You should confirm the legal name of the company and go to the website of the Secretary of State where you live and see if the company is registered there. If there is any hesitation by the caller in providing the information then simply hang up.
Remember you have something they want, your valuable asset, your structured settlement payments. Don't let yourself be pressured or bamboozled.
